Stewart century thwarts Green squeeze as Kent cling on

Grant Stewart’s glorious 130 helped to secure a nerve-shredding draw for Kent and frustrate James Anderson on a dramatic last day of the Rothesay County Championship match against Lancashire at Blackpool.Such an outcome had seemed unlikely in the extreme in mid-afternoon, when the visitors had slumped to 116 for seven in the second innings, still 149 in arrears. At that point it looked as though Anderson was on course for an innings victory in his first game as Red Rose skipper. But Stewart and Joey Evison put on 182 for the eighth wicket in thrilling fashion to take Kent into the black, and even though Anderson had Stewart caught at cover for 130, Kent survived to finish on 328 for eight, with Evison unbeaten on a brilliantly gutsy 77 when the players shook hands.Australian off-spinner Chris Green took four for 104 and Tom Bailey three for 61 for Lancashire, who are still waiting for their first Championship victory of the season. By contrast, the draw ends a dismal run of four defeats for Daniel Bell-Drummond’s side.Needing to bat almost all day to avoid defeat, Kent chose to open the batting with specialist leg-spinner, Matt Parkinson, who was doing the job for the first time in his county career. But it was Parkinson’s opening partner, Ben Compton, who was the first batsman dismissed when he was lbw to Bailey for six in the sixth over of the morning.Having removed their opponents’ best and most adhesive batsman, Lancashire then dismissed Parkinson for four three overs later when the former Old Trafford favourite turned an off-spinner from Green into the hands of Josh Bohannon at backward short leg.The following hour was filled with appeals, most of them cacophonous, none of them answered in the affirmative. Instead, Jaydn Denly and Bell-Drummond took their side to lunch on 74 for two, the only alarm coming in the final over before the interval when Denly was struck a painful blow on the point of the elbow by a shortish ball from Mitch Stanley.Kent’s equilibrium was then disturbed in an even more significant fashion four balls into the afternoon session when Bell-Drummond was dismissed for 13, Keaton Jennings sticking out his right hand to take a superb reflex catch at short leg off Green. That success began a golden half hour for Green, who had Tawanda Muyeye caught by Jennings at short leg for three and Jack Leaning, caught at slip by Luke Wells off successive deliveries to complete a devastating spell in which he had removed three top-order batsmen in 15 balls. The only solace for Kent in this period came when Denly reached his maiden first-class fifty with a single off Stanley and the hopes of the visitors might have been raised a trifle when he put on 32 for the sixth wicket with Joey Evison. But it seemed that Lancashire were not to be denied. Now bowling off-spin, Bailey knocked back Denly’s off stump with a fine ball when the 19-year-old had made 57 and four balls later, he had Harry Finch caught at short leg by Jennings for nought. But Evison and Grant Stewart then went on the attack in utterly memorable fashion sharing a stand filled with attacking strokeplay either side of tea. In the second over of the evening session, Stewart hit Mitchell Stanley for three vicious leg side sixes, reaching a 42-ball half-century in the process with five fours and four maximums.Just 43 minutes later, a cover-driven four off Green took Stewart to his 79-ball hundred, He had smashed eight sixes in addition to nine fours and he and Evison had set a new eighth-wicket first-class record for Kent against Lancashire. However, just when Kent were glimpsing safety, Stewart was caught at cover by Bailey for 130 and it needed Wes Agar to help Evison achieve a draw that must seem a little like a victory.

Leeds eye surprise move to sign "exceptional" Burnley ace before deadline

Leeds United have emerged as surprise suitors to sign an “exceptional” Burnley player who wants to leave Turf Moor this month.

Leeds still quiet in January transfer window

The Whites are sitting pretty at the top of the Championship table following Wednesday evening’s 2-0 win over Norwich City – Daniel Farke’s former side.

A four-horse promotion race is emerging between Leeds, Sheffield United, Burnley and Sunderland, with just five points separating the quartet.

Those at Elland Road and the 49ers Enterprises are yet to add to their squad during the winter transfer market, though, with the only piece of business being Joe Gelhardt’s loan move to Hull City.

Farke and Leeds have been linked with a number of players, including Aston Villa attacking midfielder Emiliano Buendia. The message from the Leeds boss has been the club will “stay awake”, however, Farke did name-check Buendia when asked about the Argentine playmaker and a potential loan move.

“If he’s not in a white shirt or a yellow shirt we don’t speak about them. We just speak about business when it’s done. I think he just spoke in general about this, the door is perhaps open.

“I’ve also read the comments because I’m interested in football and also the Premier League. I think he just spoke in general and he has not said the door is open for Leeds United, he’s said it’s open for a loan.

“Obviously I’ve worked with Emi Buendia in former years, he was one of my best players, I really rate him but I don’t comment on the situation of a player right now playing for a different side.

“I will never rule out business for us because if you find a player who improves your squad, why not? But also they need to have a really good character and be affordable.”

Worse than Aaronson: Farke must drop Leeds man who lost 80% duels

The Leeds United forward failed to make much of an impact in the win over Norwich.

ByDan Emery Jan 23, 2025

An attacking addition could be on the cards before the February 3 deadline, and a name from a promotion rival is thought to be a potential target.

Leeds eyeing move for Burnley’s Mike Tresor

According to reports abroad, relayed by Sport Witness, Leeds are surprisingly emerging in the race to sign Mike Tesor from rivals Burnley. It is stated that the Clarets are keen to get rid of Tresor before the deadline as they look to recoup the €18m they paid in 2023.

Alongside Leeds, Anderlecht, KAA Gent and Ajax are also interested in the attacker, with the latter of the four clubs Tresor’s preferred destination.

The 25-year-old, who can play as an attacking midfielder or on the wing, has played just once for Scott Parker’s side this season, registering an assist in 33 minutes against Reading in the FA Cup.

Tresor, dubbed “exceptional” in the past, has scored 30 career goals during his career, and by the looks of it, Leeds have one eye on a move for the Burnley man before the deadline. Whether or not the Clarets would sell to the Whites is another question.

    WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

One fan, @Moratarse, urged the Gunners to use performing-enhancing drugs on Riccardo Calafiori to get him fit for the quarter-final, writing on X: "Pump Calafiori with every PED known to man I do not wanna see Kiwior vs Mbappe next week."

Another, @bhavss14, wrote: "Saka comes back from a hamstring. Gabriel gets injured with a hamstring. Our luck is horrid."

"Sorry i’m not watching the madrid game without gabriel. i’m going to throw up," said @m1nuyln.

@Jevickers24: "Arsenal’s season is all but over. Your only chance against Madrid was a solid defense, but now with Calafiori & Gabriel out, it’s looking grim."

"Lmao our injury luck has been comical. 2 weeks off for the team, Gabriel injured before Madrid. We’re getting washed," was @SaliMartinaj's view.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The situation grew even more grim for Mikel Arteta's men when Jurrien Timber went down just before the half hour mark and required treatment. While the Dutchman managed to continue, the scare only worsened the Gunners fans' fear.

"Timber down now, Madrid are scoring 10," @plumebrotha said, while @IYIono added: "White, Gabriel and now Timber all in the span of 2 days… Can’t forget Calafiori on international duty too."

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

England have announced that the Newcastle left-winger has returned to Newcastle after getting injured in their World Cup qualifier at Wembley on Friday night. Gordon would have been keen to make his mark on the England squad under new boss Thomas Tuchel, but will have to return to his club to impress ahead of the next international break. The Magpies and England faithful will be fearful of a more serious injury after Tuchel had been concerned by the injury after the game.

  • WHAT TUCHEL SAID

After the game, Tuchel said: "He looks injured. First of all I thought it's his stomach, but it's his hip and it does not look good. It's a bit worrying, yeah."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

England have not announced plans to call up a replacement for Gordon so Tuchel will have to rely on his current squad options for a replacement. Rashford started on the left-wing against Albania and could be in-line for yet another start. Other options could include Jarrod Bowen, Morgan Rogers or Eberechi Eze – although none of which are natural left-sided forwards.

  • WHAT NEXT FOR GORDON?

Gordon will return to Newcastle for assessment and treatment on his hip injury. It will be a nervous wait for the Newcastle fans, likely still revelling in their League Cup victory, to see when their star man will return. The Magpies are vying for Champions League football but will need to pick up their results in the Premier League first.

Namibia's shock ends South Africa's title defence

Namibia have toppled South Africa to end their defence of the U-19 World Cup and that ranks as one of the country’s grandest sporting days

Mohammad Isam31-Jan-2016The manual scoreboard still had Namibia on 135 but the Namibian players, by now counting the runs on their fingers, knew the truth. They knew that Fritz Coetzee’s quick single in the 40th over was the 137th: the winning run. Their sprint towards the two unbeaten batsmen came suddenly, given how still and nervous they had been as they sat expectantly outside the dressing-room.The outcome at the Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium Academy Ground in Cox’s Bazar was humungous for Namibia, and earth-shattering for South Africa. The defending champions were knocked out after their second group stage match – and that, too, to a lightweight neighbour.Even at the Under-19 level where teams go through rapid changes, roughly every two years, this is a shock result. A crowd of about 80 had witnessed a fine underdog story.Their manager Andre Schmidlin said that Namibia’s qualification for the quarter-finals of the U-19 World Cup, for the first time in history, ranks as one of their greatest sporting triumphs.”As a country we have never had a side qualify for the quarter-finals on any world stage in any sport,” Schmidlin said. “For us as a country, this is massive. The implication back home is massive. It means more numbers coming in to play cricket and hopefully more funding.”We have football, rugby and field hockey as our main sports. So cricket is at third or fourth. This win will help. A small nation like us should not beat the world champions.”According to Schmidlin, a majority of the current Namibia Under-19 squad have been playing together since the age of 13. They had a very small pool of players to choose from for this squad, which made the win sweeter, apart from the fact that they had defeated mighty neighbours South Africa.”This is a phenomenal group of kids together. We only had a group of 28 boys to pick this side from. We go down to South Africa twice a year to play competitions in state provinces. We usually do well over there,” he said.

****

“Reigning champs under the pump, eh! Under pressure?”After they had South Africa six down for 37, someone chirped this towards the South African batsmen. Much of the talk within the Namibian players was in Afrikaans but sometimes, they would break into a bit of English. Perhaps just to remind the world what was going on.The Namibia batsmen were thoroughly challenged in the 137-run chase but they had done the hard part at the start of the day, reducing South Africa to 60 for 8 in the 26th over. Michael van Lingen had taken four of those wickets, the fourth the most spectacular when he broke through Tony de Zorzi’s defences to knock over his off-stump.Van Lingen bowled at medium-pace but whenever he had the batsman, both left-handers and right-handers, leaving a few outside off-stump, he would crank up the pace and tighten his line. He said that the plan was to bring it into the left-handers and de Zorzi’s dismissal was stunning for its late movement.”It was nice to see the wickets fly,” van Lingen said. “I first tried to build pressure; consistency and patience brings wickets. Everyone around me kept up my spirits. I try to bring the ball into the left-hander and take it out for the right-handers. I think I succeeded today.”Van Lingen, whose father is South African, said that they were keen to show that Namibia are not in Bangladesh just to make up the numbers. He moved to Paarl three years ago, and studies at Paarl Boys High School, although he is originally from Walvis Bay in Namibia.”With all the support of my teammates, I really wanted to show South Africa that we are Namibia and we are here to play. I have been asked to play for Namibia’s senior side but I want to take my chances in South Africa. I wanted to show them that I am here,” he said.

****

At the end of the game, the Namibian players piled on to Lohan Louwrens, their slightly-built middle-order batsman whose unbeaten 58 guided them through the nervous chase. Louwrens looked dazed by having all his teammates on top of him. To give him some air, they hoisted him on their shoulders, as they sang and cheered on their way to the dressing-room where their manager Schmidlin gathered them around for a prayer. There was a team song after which the ICC held the prize-giving ceremony. When they were asked to take a selfie with the scoreboard in the background, they readily agreed and then walked all the way to the other end of the ground. They kept slapping each other in the back, having supported each other all day. They larked about as they did their cool-down stretches. There was laughter, a few whistles and the odd joke about going to Dhaka. They are most likely to take on India in the quarter-final on February 6.

Ashwin's presence breeds India's belief

India’s batsmen squandered the advantage of batting first on the opening day but R Ashwin was around to pick up the ball on the second day

Sidharth Monga in Mohali 06-Nov-20151:14

Manjrekar: Ashwin willing to deceive batsmen in flight

It’s no surprise that R Ashwin had a side strain; he has been carrying this team for a while now. We will continue to talk about his overseas record until it is corrected, but it is hard to imagine a player who has had more impact in such little time on India’s Test fortunes. This is his 29th Test, the 12th series that he has taken part in, and already he has been the Man of the Series four times. Only Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar have won more series awards for India; they played 103 and 200 Tests. If he stays fit, Ashwin is a good bet to join them on that list by the first week of December.Until he went off the field in the first ODI, in Kanpur, it seemed like we were going back to the old script: India’s quicks struggle on the first morning, and then MS Dhoni pulls the opposition into a web of spin, which Ashwin nearly pulled off. That Ashwin wasn’t there played no little part in India’s losing the ODI series. That Ashwin was available for the Tests played no little part in the pitches asked for. He gives India the confidence to ask for such tracks, he gives India the confidence the other two spinners can flourish while the pressure from Ashwin is on, and, in Mohali, his presence gave India the confidence they were well placed even after their batsmen squandered the advantage of batting first.Until Ashwin was brought on to bowl on the second day, that confidence seemed to be evaporating as India offered South Africa 33 minutes of the easiest batting in the Test until then. A pace bowler at one end, eager to bowl one down the pads every over, and Amit Mishra at the other, and South Africa had added 28 runs in 10 overs without a bother. If the ball was reversing, the pace bowlers neither tried to hide it nor bowled full enough. There were two other possible explanations for such a delay to bring on the bowler who bowled beautifully on the first evening and looked like getting a wicket every ball. Either India were trying to create the rough on a pitch that had enough of it on day one or, more worryingly, Ashwin was not a 100% after his side strain. On the first day, he had shown some stiffness while fielding, but the ball had come out just as beautifully as it did in Sri Lanka. This was a pitch that offered a lot of sideways turn, but he repeatedly kept beating Hashim Amla and Dean Elgar in flight. The ball kept dipping on them, they kept defending either in front of the body or going back hurriedly into the crease to keep the ball out.On the second morning, now done with the nervous final minutes of a day, the South African pair welcomed facing bowlers other than Ashwin. As Elgar and Amla made themselves comfortable, the 201 on the board, which Sanjay Bangar wisely said was worth more than it read, began to look its size. You didn’t want AB de Villiers to come in with no pressure of the scoreboard on it. A Test match is a long time, but on a pitch such as this every delivery faced comfortably by the batsmen can make you desperate. Then came on Ashwin. He did concede that it was better he was allowed to take it easy in the morning, coming out of an injury, but said he was not sure if that was the plan. One thing was certain: suddenly the game changed. Elgar wasn’t to the pitch of the first ball he played from Ashwin. He went to sweep the next ball, and was beaten again as the ball dipped. Ashwin said he knew this is what he was going to do. He had watched videos of Elgar batting in Johannesburg. The ball kept dipping again and again, and Elgar finally played the slog-sweep that Ashwin was after.Let Ashwin take it from here: “Elgar, I have seen him bat. Had a wonderful time in watching him on YouTube last night. He has done that a lot at Johannesburg. I made it a point to tell him it’s not Johannesburg unfortunately. I thought it was coming, I knew he was going to play that shot.”

“It’s all about how it’s coming out of your hand. For me it’s coming out really well. So I don’t think I require much turn from any pitch at this point of time.”R Ashwin on the key to bowling on a surface like Mohali

De Villiers has spent the whole tour saying he has not had any problem against Ashwin, and that he had been getting out trying to play his shots. This, though, was going to be timeless. India beginning to pull South Africa back after posting a low total on the board. A turning pitch had previously gone wrong when India didn’t bowl against the genius of Kevin Pietersen and the grit of Alastair Cook in Mumbai in 2012. There were two geniuses in the middle in Mohali, and the memories of Mumbai were back. This Ashwin, though, is different. The Ashwin of the Mumbai Test wasn’t getting enough action on the ball, and in his desperation to do so he was dropping balls short or overpitching them. This Ashwin has found the best action and technique for his bowling. He rarely pitches too short or too full now. Add to it a pitch that is helping him, and de Villiers was fumbling in the dark for a bit before the genius took over. In that three-over spell to him, Ashwin said, he felt he could have had de Villiers any time.De Villiers went on to display his genius, as Ashwin acknowledged too, but by that time the bowler had sent back the other genius, Amla. Expectedly Amla tried to use his feet to get to the pitch of the ball now that Ashwin wasn’t giving him the full balls. When he did it to Ashwin, the ball dipped alarmingly, beat Amla in the flight, and bounced into wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha’s chest before disturbing the stumps. The pitch might have had subconscious impact on the batsmen, but none of Ashwin’s wickets came purely because of the pitch.”It’s all about how it’s coming out of your hand,” Ashwin said when asked what was the key to bowl on this pitch. “For me it’s coming out really well. So I don’t think I require much turn from any pitch at this point of time.”In the big first exchange in a big series, India’s batsmen seemed to have dropped the ball, but they can be thankful Ashwin was there to pick it up. For good measure he made it dip and turn sharply on a surface that is offering slow turn.
